Indoor–Outdoor Living for an Expansive Family Home

These executive American clients approached Havana Interiors after making a significant move from a four-bedroom condominium into a sprawling 11,000 sq ft residence.

Having lived internationally for many years, the family had accumulated furniture throughout their expatriate journey, including pieces they had originally brought with them from New York almost 20 years earlier. While some of these pieces held significance and could be incorporated into the new home, much of their existing furniture was simply too small in scale for the generous proportions of the new property.

Our role was to carefully consider what should remain and source the substantial amount of new furniture required to make this exceptionally large residence feel complete, comfortable and cohesive.

A key part of the brief was to celebrate one of the home's greatest luxuries - its private swimming pool and beautiful gardens.

Rather than treating the outdoor areas as separate from the interiors, we designed the main living spaces to embrace them. The sitting area was positioned to face the swimming pool and gardens, allowing the family to enjoy the greenery and views throughout the day and creating a stronger connection between indoor and outdoor living.

Furniture selection was particularly important given the scale of the property. Generous sofas, substantial occasional pieces and appropriately sized rugs were introduced to anchor the expansive rooms, while layers of texture and softer furnishings helped create warmth and intimacy.

The overall concept was sophisticated yet relaxed, ensuring that despite its impressive proportions, the residence still felt like a welcoming family home. Existing pieces with history were thoughtfully incorporated alongside new furniture, allowing the interiors to reflect both the family's past and this new chapter of their life in Singapore.

The outdoor spaces became a natural extension of the home, designed for relaxing, entertaining and enjoying the tropical Singapore lifestyle. By orienting the interiors towards the pool and gardens, the surrounding landscape became an integral part of the design itself.

The result is an expansive yet inviting residence that makes the most of its exceptional setting - a sophisticated family home where the interiors, gardens and pool are designed to be enjoyed together.

For Havana Interiors, this project was about more than furnishing a much larger property. It was about helping an established expatriate family transition from one way of living to another, retaining pieces from their history while creating a home appropriate for the scale and lifestyle of their new residence.
