Calm, Colonial-Inspired Indoor–Outdoor Living

Our American executive clients approached Havana Interiors following their relocation from the United States to Singapore.

With no existing furniture being brought with them, the move provided an opportunity to create their new 2,000 sq ft residence entirely from the ground up — developing a home that reflected both their personal aesthetic and the more tropical way of living they had embraced in Singapore.

Situated on a high floor, the apartment benefited from an incredible natural breeze. The clients loved living with the doors open, allowing the interior living areas to connect naturally with the outdoor dining space.

This relationship between inside and out became central to the design.

Rather than treating the balcony as a separate exterior area, we approached the living, dining and outdoor spaces as one large, connected zone. Furniture placement was carefully considered to maintain clear sightlines and an effortless flow between each area, allowing the clients to move naturally from relaxed indoor living to outdoor dining and entertaining.

The design brief combined Singapore colonial influences with a minimal and calming aesthetic.

Rather than interpreting colonial style in a traditional or overly decorative way, we introduced subtle references through natural materials, considered timber elements and timeless furniture forms. These were balanced with clean lines, a restrained palette and uncluttered styling to create a lighter, more contemporary interpretation.

The result is an interior that feels connected to Singapore without feeling themed.

Comfort was equally important. Furniture was selected to encourage relaxed everyday living, while the open-plan layout allowed the apartment to feel more generous than its footprint and make the most of the natural light, breeze and tropical surroundings.

With no existing furniture to accommodate, each piece could be selected specifically for the proportions and flow of the residence. Rugs, lighting, artwork and accessories were introduced with restraint, bringing warmth and character while preserving the sense of calm that was fundamental to the brief.

The completed home is serene, understated and effortlessly connected to its surroundings — a contemporary interpretation of tropical Singapore living where the boundaries between indoors and outdoors are intentionally softened.

For our clients, relocating to Singapore offered an opportunity to embrace a different way of life. Their new home reflects exactly that: doors open, fresh air flowing through and the interior and exterior spaces designed to be enjoyed as one.
